The Angell Foundation is an invitation-only foundation. We conduct regular independent research on community-based organizations working in our fields of interest and we invite select organizations to submit requests for funding. Though we know that many excellent organizations and programs are active in our regions, we are able to consider only a small number for grant awards each year.  We do not accept unsolicited grant requests, letters of inquiry or proposals at this time.

Letters of Inquiry

Upon an invitation from The Angell Foundation, applicants submit a Letter of Inquiry.

Letters of Inquiry allow applicants to give us a snapshot of their proposed project/program. Well-prepared LOIs establish a connection between the organization’s program goals and the Foundation’s funding priorities.  LOIs should be detailed, clear and concise, while conveying the impact the proposed project will make on the issue or population it addresses.

Letters of Inquiry should be three pages or less and include the following information:

• A statement of the organization’s purpose, objectives and services

• The geographic area and population served by the project/organization

• A description of the project and its impact 

• Project and organizational budgets

• The desired grant amount

• The organization's 501(c)(3) approval letter

• A list of members of its board or directors

• A list of collaborating organizations

   

After an initial review, the Foundation will acknowledge receipt of all materials.  We may also contact you to request additional information, including but not limited to:

• Additional program evaluation materials

• A phone appointment with staff

• A site visit or in person meeting with staff
  

The Foundation generally requires three months from the date we receive a Letter of Inquiry to decide whether or not to invite a full proposal.

 
Full Proposals

If the Foundation determines that a proposed project is aligned with the Foundation's mission, focus areas and funding priorities, we contact the organization and forward  proposal preparation guidelines and materials. 

The Foundation requires at least six months to conduct a complete review of a proposed project from the LOI to the grant stage. This timeframe includes our comprehensive due-diligence process of applicant correspondence, site visits, and material review. 

Funding decisions are made three times per year.
